A new platform has been launched on Reading Borough Council’s website which directs residents to information on assistive technologies and access to support independent living.
AskSARA is an award-winning online self-help guide where residents can explore a problem they are experiencing. It provides expert advice and information on equipment and support for all adults.
The yes/no questionnaire can be filled in by anyone to help themselves, a friend, or a family member. An impartial and anonymous report is created that suggests suitable equipment for an individual’s needs which can help with the problem or provides advice on how to manage an issue.
The guide can also make residents aware of charities and organisations in Reading which could help.
AskSARA can suggest help for every room of the house and the garden or help with daily activities from washing and dressing to getting out and about. This includes kitchen, dressing, and mobility aids or grab bars in the bathroom. It can also provide recommendations for issues with sight, hearing, and memory loss.
AskSARA says there are ingenious products on the market which, if used to solve a problem, can keep residents safe and well in their own homes for longer. The devices can be used temporarily after illness, during recouperation at any age, or with a variety conditions.
The survey may suggest a Care Act Assessment should be carried out by occupational therapists from the council’s adult social care team and advises how to contact the team.
Paul Gittings, Lead Councillor for Adult Social Care in Reading, said: “This is a great tool to help anyone who may need a bit of extra help at home.
“There is such a lot of equipment out there which can make everyday tasks so much easier if you are finding them harder.
“From making a hot drink safely, to taking medication on time, or getting out and about, these can make such a difference to lives if they can be successfully completed independently.
“Not only is there practical advice but there is lots of health and wellbeing advice there. This is through getting in touch with charities and organisations specific to Reading, or activities which can help people with support or practical help.
“Any adult out there can use it for a family member, friend, or for themselves, so we can support the life that matters to them for as long as possible.”
AskSARA is a bespoke platform provided by Living Made Easy, which is part of The Shaw Trust.
